Amazon's Starlink Rival Gets a Catchier New Name
Amazon renames Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo as it prepares for initial low Earth orbit broadband services with 153 satellites deployed out of 3,200 planned.
- Nov. 13, Amazon renamed Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo, positioning the program as its LEO broadband offering ahead of next year's initial service launches.
- The change reflects its orbital focus as Amazon said the name nods to low Earth orbit where 153 of more than 3,200 proposed satellites reside, said Rajeev Badyal, Amazon vice president.
- 153 satellites deployed so far, Amazon has launched the first 27 satellites in April 2025 and received clearance for over 3,200 satellites.
- Before the end of March, Amazon expects to begin service in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany and France, while a spokesperson declined to specify the next satellite deployment amid FCC deadlines.
- SpaceX has finished its three contracted missions, ULA has five Atlas 5 launches remaining, and the schedule depends on 38 Vulcan Centaurs, 18 Ariane 6s, and up to 27 New Glenns amid delays.
