INDIA, AUG 5 – India plans major BrahMos missile purchases for Navy and Air Force after the missiles proved crucial in retaliatory strikes against Pakistani terror and military targets, officials said.
- In the wake of Operation Sindoor, India is set to place large-scale orders for the Indo-Russian BrahMos missiles for the Navy and the Air Force.
- During the operation, BrahMos missiles destroyed terror launch pads in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir on May 7, following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.
- Deploying on multiple platforms, the Indian Navy plans to deploy BrahMos missiles on its Veer-class warships, while the Indian Air Force will equip Su-30 MKI fighter jets, showcasing fire-and-forget capability, supersonic speed, low radar cross-section, and pinpoint accuracy.
- Signaling strategic doctrine, the procurement underscores India’s deterrence focus, with officials saying India will continue making sovereign defence decisions and resist external pressure.
- A high-level defence ministry meeting is expected soon to clear procurement of air-launched and surface-launched BrahMos systems, likely including upgraded variants with scramjet propulsion.
