'Polite Visitor:' Bear Sneaks Into NorCal Zoo To Visit Fellow Bears

  • On Oct 17, Ms Christine Noel spotted a wild American black bear inside Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, California, greeting the three resident bears through their enclosure fencing.
  • With a perimeter fence about 2.4m high, topped with barbed wire, officials suspect the bear climbed a tree to enter the adjacent 67-acre redwood forest and got trapped inside.
  • Nose to nose interactions saw the intruder go nose to nose with captive bears and bat enrichment toys, staying on the boardwalk path without climbing railings or entering habitats.
  • On Friday morning, an employee discovered the bear, prompting a rapid response while Eureka Police Department officers and a California Department of Fish and Wildlife warden coaxed it through a service gate after about 20 minutes.
  • As California's oldest zoo, Sequoia Park Zoo, home to more than 150 animals, said the incident prompted lively online chatter and visitor safety reminders last week.
