PMJDY marks 11 years with 560 million accounts, ₹2.68 trillion deposits

The scheme has empowered over 56 crore accounts, with 56% held by women and deposits rising nearly twelvefold since 2015, driving financial inclusion across India.

  • On its 11th anniversary, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has opened over 56.16 crore accounts with deposits totaling Rs2.68 lakh crore, the Ministry of Finance said.
  • Launched as a national mission on August 28, 2014, PMJDY was designed to bring the unbanked into formal banking, enabling Direct Benefit Transfer and social security linkages through zero-balance accounts, RuPay cards with insurance, overdraft options, and Business Correspondents outreach.
  • A large share of accounts—67%—are in rural and semi-urban areas, with women holding 56% of accounts and 38.68 crore RuPay debit cards issued, the Finance Ministry reported.
  • The government has launched a saturation campaign holding camps in 2.7 lakh gram panchayats later this year, and about Rs 6.9 lakh crore flowed into beneficiary accounts through DBT in FY 2024-25.
  • Guinness World Records recognised a one-week drive that opened 18,096,130 accounts, and Union ministers called PMJDY a 'game changer' and landmark global model for inclusion.
