PBO trims economic forecast for 2026 and 2027 amid new U.S. tariffs
The Parliamentary Budget Office lowered its economic growth forecast amid new U.S. tariffs and Canadian countermeasures.
The office projects real gross domestic product growth of 0.9% this year and 1.5% in 2027, down from its June estimates.
Trade talks between Canada and the United States broke down in late August before both countries imposed new tariffs.
The PBO projects a $63.3 billion deficit in 2026–27, rising to $70.2 billion in 2027–28, with deficits averaging $3 billion higher annually through 2030–31.
Black clouds are accumulating above the Canadian economy as a result of the ongoing trade war between the Trump administration and Canada, says Parliamentary Budget Officer Annette Ryan, who is reducing growth projections for 2026 and 2027.
