Quebec's Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve Running Dry Amid High Demand
The buffer meant to steady prices and supply is empty as Quebec producers report stronger sales and rising exports to the United States.
On Monday, Quebec Maple Syrup Producers President Luc Goulet announced the province's strategic syrup reserve has run dry amid surging global demand for the product.
Goulet cited 2007 and 2008 stock shortages as examples where the industry lost customers to competing products when supply became unavailable.
The maple syrup sector contributed $1.21 billion to Quebec's gross domestic product in 2025, employing more than 10,000 workers and generating $285 million in tax revenue.
Currently, nearly 65 per cent of exports go to the United States, down from 80 per cent twenty years ago, Maple Industry Council President Louis Turenne noted.
Turenne emphasized accelerating development in European, Australian, and Asian markets to reduce reliance on the U.S. market and capture untapped growth opportunities.
