Senegal Sack Manager Thiaw After World Cup Exit
The federation said the team’s results forced a change after Senegal lost its first two group games and blew a late lead against Belgium.
Senegal fired manager Pape Bouna Thiaw on Saturday, citing the team's disappointing World Cup performance as the reason for the change at the helm.
Losses to France and Norway in opening group games, followed by squandering a 2-0 lead against Belgium in the round of 32, defined the team's disappointing World Cup campaign.
Thiaw, 45, faced a five-match ban starting in September for leading a player walk-off during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco in Rabat.
Following the exit, Midfielder Pape Gueye stated he would not represent the country again until Thiaw was removed; the federation scheduled a Monday press conference.
French World Cup winner Patrick Vieira, born in Dakar, is reportedly among the favorites to replace Thiaw as Senegal seeks leadership for the next cycle.
It takes some getting used to, because day 32 of the World Cup is a rest day. So there is plenty of time to look back and forward at the quarter-finals played and the upcoming semi-finals.
