NORTH BAY, ONTARIO, AUG 5 – Mayor Peter Chirico repaid $16,000 in personal expenses charged to a city credit card, prompting an Ontario Provincial Police investigation amid concerns of conflict of interest.
- On Tuesday, Ontario Provincial Police corporate communications confirmed it has opened an investigation into allegations involving North Bay Mayor Peter Chirico.
- The North Bay Police Service referred a complaint to the OPP due to an institutional conflict of interest because Mayor Peter Chirico sits on the North Bay Police Services Board, Gosia Puzio said in an email.
- The credit card review revealed nearly $16,000 in questionable expenses charged to a city-issued corporate credit card, including a golf membership and North Bay Battalion season tickets, which Chirico says he later repaid.
- North Bay city council last month rejected a motion for a forensic audit, with only Jamie Lowery among three members voting in favour.
- This coming week’s meeting on Aug. 12 will address the investigation Chirico requested from Integrity Commissioner Guy Giorno.
