Nigeria: More Needed to Combat Desertification, Drought
- On June 17, 2025, ECOWAS and the United Nations observed the international day dedicated to addressing land degradation and drought, highlighting the theme "Restore the Land, Unlock the Opportunities".
- This day was established by UN resolution A/RES/49/115 in 1994 to raise global awareness of desertification's threats and promote sustainable land use.
- Nigeria faces severe desertification with 63.83% of its land affected, losing 400,000 hectares yearly and about $5.1 billion annually due to land degradation.
- The UNCCD has highlighted that land degradation results in the loss of more than one million square kilometers of fertile terrain globally each year, and achieving restoration targets by 2030 will demand daily investments of approximately $1 billion.
- The event urges Nigeria and the international community to increase funding, enforce sustainable practices, and support initiatives like the Great Green Wall to reverse degradation.
