FIFA World Cup 2026: India Finally Gets a Broadcaster as Zee Entertainment Secures Rights
The deal covers 39 global football events and ends months of uncertainty over telecast rights in India, with matches on Unite8 Sports and ZEE5.
On Monday, Zee Entertainment Enterprises secured Indian broadcast and streaming rights to 39 FIFA soccer events spanning 2026 through 2034, with coverage beginning June 11 on Unite8 Sports and ZEE5.
Protracted negotiations preceded the deal, with FIFA initially seeking $100 million before revising the ask to approximately $60 million; JioStar tabled $20 million and Sony withdrew from the process.
The package includes 39 global football events, notably the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027, futsal tournaments, and age-group championships, alongside documentary series tied to each property.
Romy Gai, FIFA chief business officer, called the Indian market strategically important, though nearly 90 per cent of the 104 matches will be played between midnight and 6 am IST, creating advertiser challenges.
This deal expands Zee's presence in a market historically dominated by cricket, as CEO Punit Goenka said, "We are excited to bring one of the world's biggest sporting spectacles to Indian audiences.
FIFA established an alliance with Zee Entertainment to broadcast the 2026 World Cup and 39 tournaments in India until 2034, covering a high-demand youth market.
