Garda Social Media Accounts Breached by Crypto-Hackers

The verified account, followed by almost 300,000 people, was used to push a fake XRP giveaway that could drain users’ wallets.

  • On Wednesday night, cryptocurrency scammers compromised the official X accounts of An Garda Siochana, using @GardaTraffic and @GardaInfo to promote a bogus "airdrop" scheme targeting thousands of followers.
  • Scammers replaced the profiles' branding with that of Xaman, a cryptocurrency wallet app, while changing the listed location to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to appear legitimate.
  • The breach affects @GardaTraffic, which has over 600,000 followers, and @GardaInfo, followed by almost 300,000 people, both verified accounts scammers prize for their credibility.
  • Fraudulent posts urge users to "claim' an XRP allocation as part of a supposed" airdrop, but clicking links and connecting cryptocurrency wallets allows scammers to drain funds immediately.
  • Hijacking verified accounts to push crypto scams has become a well-worn trick, with scammers previously targeting official profiles for Microsoft, Hyundai, and Netgear in identical schemes.
