NY Grandmother Suspected in Deaths of Daughter, 4 Grandchildren
Investigators say a handwritten note and medication bottles suggest intentional poisoning, while one child died from fatal sharp-force injuries, police said.
On Tuesday, June 23, Mechanicville police discovered six family members dead inside a John Moore Homes apartment following a welfare check, launching an active criminal investigation.
Police Chief William Rabbitt said Thursday a handwritten note found at the scene "strongly suggests" 64-year-old Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths of her daughter, Sarah Myers, and four grandchildren.
Autopsies conducted Wednesday at Albany Medical Center revealed one child suffered "fatal sharp-force injuries," while investigators recovered numerous prescription and over-the-counter medication bottles indicating possible intentional poisoning.
Estranged father Brady Harmon, living in Utah, told reporters he had not seen his four children since 2019 but had recently secured a custody agreement to reunite with them starting July 1.
The Mechanicville Police Department continues its thorough investigation with New York State Police assistance, maintaining there is no threat to the public while the Mechanicville School District provides counseling services for affected residents.
