'No winner': Kosovo snap poll unlikely to end damaging deadlock
The snap election follows a year-long stalemate after February's inconclusive vote, with the Self-Determination party winning 44% but failing to secure a majority, risking continued deadlock.
- Caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti put Kosovo back to voters on December 28 after months of stalled parliament, but experts say the vote is unlikely to end the deadlock.
- After an inconclusive Feb. 9 vote that left no majority, Vetevendosje failed to secure partners and largest opposition parties refused coalition talks amid tensions over Serbian state structures in Kosovo's north.
- Exit polls signalled little change in party standings as Vetevendosje won about 42% in February and aims to surpass 50%, while the PDK polled nearly 27%, LDK nearly 16%, AAK about 7%, and Klan Kosova projected 49 seats, only one more than February.
- Kosovo's stalled institutions have already cost taxpayers at least 30 million euros this year, delayed approval of a state budget for the coming year, and risk losing over 200 million euros and ratifying around €1 billion in European Union and World Bank loan agreements.
- Failure to secure a majority could lead to yet another early vote, as Kosovo's main political parties remain unwilling to compromise and the LDK may become kingmaker.
