Nine Dead, 45 Missing After Shipwreck Off Djibouti, IOM Says
The boat carried around 320 migrants escaping conflict and economic hardship in the Horn of Africa, with 45 still missing in one of the deadliest migration corridors, IOM said.
- On Tuesday, a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti, leaving at least nine people dead and 45 missing as it attempted to cross the Bab el-Mandeb Strait toward Yemen.
- African migrants flee conflict and poverty on this route seeking safety and economic opportunities, with the vessel departing from the port town of Obock carrying around 320 passengers.
- Tanja Pacifico, IOM's chief of mission in Djibouti, said survivors described an "extremely heavy load for the boat," while rough seas and strong winds complicated the crossing.
- The IOM is working with local authorities to assist survivors, and Dr. Youssouf Moussa confirmed from the disaster site that rescue operations are ongoing.
- This shipwreck marks the first incident this year in the area, though last year more than 900 migrants died or went missing on the strait—the highest toll on record, the IOM said.
