Some Women to Be Offered at-Home DIY Cervical Screening Tests
ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, JUN 23 – The NHS aims to increase cervical screening by mailing self-sampling HPV kits to under-screened women, potentially preventing 5,000 deaths annually, officials said.
- In March 2025, the UK National Screening Committee approved at-home cervical screening kits for women in England who rarely or never attend screenings.
- A study conducted by King’s College London demonstrated that distributing self-sampling kits through GP clinics or by mail can substantially increase the number of women participating in screening programs.
- The kits detect human papillomavirus , which causes most cervical cancer cases, and women with HPV will be advised to see a clinician in person for further assessment.
- Wes Streeting, the Secretary of Health and Social Care, highlighted that self-sampling kits offer a flexible healthcare option tailored to individuals’ needs, and this new method has the potential to save approximately 5,000 lives each year in England.
- The NHS plans to begin rolling out the kits in January 2026 to targeted groups, aiming to boost participation and progress toward eliminating cervical cancer by 2040.
