New Swiss Guards Sworn in to Defend the Pope
The Swiss Guards introduced a black wool uniform for senior officers, reviving a design unused since 1976, with each costing about €2,000, funded by a private donor.
- On Tuesday, the Swiss Guard unveiled a black wool uniform for nonceremonial formal occasions, while its iconic Renaissance-era ceremonial dress remains in use.
- Rooted in history, the new uniform was commissioned after trying an update a decade ago, and it revives a suit phased out in 1976 and revived in recent years.
- A Swiss workshop made the garments and an unnamed benefactor financed them at about 2,000 each, for the senior ranks, officials said.
- Reserved for senior officers, the new uniform debuts at a dinner the night before the Oct. 4 swearing-in, which expects around 4,000 attendees in the San Damaso courtyard.
- With initial approvals in 2023, officials say 1.74m euros have been raised, and a new appeal in 2026 aims to start construction in 2027.

Swiss Guards, Protectors of the Pope, Don New Uniforms
Daniel Ibanez Swiss Guards model the new military dress uniform in a courtyard of the Swiss Guards’ Vatican barracks during an Oct. 2, 2025, presentation. The uniform, an updated version of a historic uniform used from the late 1800s to 1976, will be used at important events. The mostly wool military-dress uniform will not replace the iconic red, orange and blue uniforms for which the guards are famous.
Black cloth, two golden rows of buttons and a yellow-white belt: Only the high-ranking members are allowed to wear the new gala uniform of the Swiss Guard. Vatican tourists will therefore not be able to see the magnificent montage of the papal army.
