Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany Announces New Bishop
Bishop Edward Scharfenberger resigned at 77, and Auxiliary Bishop Mark W. O'Connell of Boston was appointed to lead Albany's diocese of over 316,000 Catholics.
- The Vatican announced Monday morning that Pope Leo XIV appointed Auxiliary Bishop Mark W. O'Connell of Boston as successor to Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, Bishop of Albany, long ago.
- Having led the diocese since 2014, Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, Bishop of Albany, is 77 years old.
- Auxiliary Bishop Mark W. O'Connell of Boston, who was ordained in 1990, holds a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and taught at St. John Seminary, set to become Albany's bishop later this year.
- Installation is set for Dec. 5, when Mark W. O'Connell will be installed as Albany's 11th bishop; the announcement came hours before Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger was set to speak to the press.
- The transition comes amid the Diocese of Albany's Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a $8 million settlement, and earlier this year plans to realign 1/3 of properties.
