DOGE cuts AmeriCorps programs across West Virginia
- In April 2025, nearly $400 million in AmeriCorps funding was eliminated under President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, resulting in the termination of service for roughly 30,000 volunteers across the country, including those involved in programs within San Francisco schools.
- The cuts followed reports of over $40 million in improper payments and led to 85% of AmeriCorps employees being placed on leave, prompting lawsuits from California and 24 other states to block these reductions.
- AmeriCorps has a longstanding role supporting education, public health, environmental programs, and youth services, including work at roughly 40 local schools where members run clubs and manage enrichment activities.
- Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul called the cuts “illegal and meritless” and warned they will cause “real negative consequences” for approximately 32,000 affected corps members nationwide.
- As a result, schools and community groups have started fundraising and advocacy efforts while a May 30 preliminary injunction hearing may decide the future of AmeriCorps funding.
