York Councillors to Vote on Revoking Sarah Ferguson's Freedom of the City
The City of York Council will decide on revoking Sarah Ferguson’s honorary status due to her links with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following precedent set by her ex-husband.
An extraordinary City of York Council meeting on March 26 will consider revoking Sarah Ferguson's Freedom of the City under Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 at The Guildhall, York.
An email published in the Mail on Sunday from 2011 described Jeffrey Epstein as 'steadfast, generous and supreme friend', sent after his 2008 conviction, prompting October proposals, while a spokesperson for the former duchess said it was sent under legal pressure.
Given in 1987 as a wedding gift, the Freedom of the City honour was awarded to Sarah Ferguson during a visit and is a rare accolade held by Winston Churchill and Dame Judi Dench.
