Spotify's Recaps Feature Helps You Return to Audiobooks You've Already Started
Spotify's new AI Audiobook Recaps offer spoiler-free summaries after 15-20 minutes of listening while the default shuffle for paid users reduces repeated songs, improving engagement.
- On Thursday, Spotify introduced the Recaps feature on iOS and made Fewer Repeats the default shuffle mode for paid users in the same update.
- Spotify says Recaps were built with publishing partners to reduce friction and help listeners rejoin stories, while Saunders notes pure randomness can cause repeats, prompting the Fewer Repeats shuffle.
- In beta on iOS, Recaps update as you progress through a book, activating after 15–20 minutes and Spotify says audiobook content won’t train large language models or mimic narrators.
- Premium users will find Fewer Repeats set by default in Playback settings but can switch back to Standard shuffle; Recaps aim to help listeners reengage and finish audiobooks.
- The move complements Spotify's post-2022 push to grow its audiobook catalog, which now exceeds 500,000 English-language books and includes partnerships with publishers and ElevenLabs.
