Amid the escalating trade dispute with Washington, Beijing quickly found a way to capitalize on the market vacuum. Chinese customs granted five-year export licenses to 183 Brazilian coffee suppliers. The decision comes just before the August 6th increase in US tariffs on Brazilian coffee to 50 percent, which threatens to cut off the largest supplier from a third of US demand.
The measure took effect on July 30, and the new Chinese export licenses will be valid for five years, according to a statement on Saturday.
