Migrant sent to El Salvador prison by the Trump administration says he was beaten by guards
EL SALVADOR, JUL 25 – More than 250 Venezuelans were deported under the Alien Enemies Act without hearings, with reports of torture and abuse prompting investigations by Venezuelan authorities.
- This past week, Andry Hernández Romero alleged he was beaten, shot with rubber projectiles, and confined in dark cells during 125 days at Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, El Salvador.
- After invoking the Alien Enemies Act, President Donald Trump expelled over 250 Venezuelan migrants to CECOT without hearings, including Hernández Romero who fled persecution in 2024.
- According to Hernández Romero in a televised interview, many detainees at CECOT have wounds from nightsticks, fractured ribs, fingers, toes, and endured physical abuse, Reuters reported.
- Meanwhile, civil rights and LGBTQ groups protested, and Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek Saab announced an investigation on July 21, while Lindsay Toczylowski warned of broader implications.
- The Department of Homeland Security has dismissed the abuse allegations, while refusing to confirm Hernández Romero’s status, and the swap freed 10 U.S. citizens.
