MI Dems seek to prosecute mask-wearing ICE, after state instituted $500 fine for being maskless during COVID
MICHIGAN, JUL 30 – The bill would impose up to 90 days in jail and $1,000 fines for officers concealing identities, amid an 830% rise in assaults on Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, lawmakers said.
- On July 25, Michigan House Democrats introduced legislation criminalizing ICE agents concealing their identities, announced by State Rep. Betsy Coffia at a July 25 press conference and following Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s $500 fines on maskless citizens.
- Department of Homeland Security data shows assaults on ICE officers surged in recent months, with officers using masks and plainclothes to hinder identification and relatives being doxed.
- DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said ICE law enforcement officers are succeeding in removing terrorists, murderers, pedophiles, and the most depraved among us from America’s communities, despite critics' attacks.
- With a Republican majority in the Michigan State House, Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall, R-Kalamazoo, said the bill's path remains uncertain despite Attorney General Dana Nessel's support.
- Similar legislation has now been filed in California, New York and Massachusetts, following federal efforts by Sen. Elissa Slotkin earlier this month.
