Meta AI's Overreach on Family Photos Sparks Fresh Privacy Alarm
Meta is modifying its AI chatbot prompts following a viral video where the system generated invasive personal profiles of children, confirming it has fixed the issue causing probing questions.
Last week, Instagram user Kalie Robins discovered Meta AI surfaced a 'Who is the child passenger?' prompt, which then assembled information about her two daughters from across Meta platforms, including deleted photos.
Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby acknowledged the company 'missed the mark,' stating 'the feature never should have prompted the individual with questions like that.' She emphasized the tool was designed to surface only accessible information.
Robins asked relatives to restrict or delete past posts, describing the process as emotionally difficult, and warned other parents to 'make it so hard to find that information' about their children.
Concerns are growing that public photos could be used to train AI models or create deepfakes, prompting many parents and photographers to restrict sharing children's faces online to protect privacy.
