‘Married at First Sight’ U.K. Canceled by Channel 4 Following Sexual Assault Allegations
Two independent reviews found no Channel 4 wrongdoing, but recommended welfare changes that the broadcaster said would make the series too onerous to continue.
Channel 4 canceled "Married at First Sight" today following sexual assault allegations, confirming the decision to end the reality series based on an Australian format.
Earlier this year, a BBC Panorama investigation alleged instances of sexual assault during the series. Although the accused men denied the allegations, the complaints prompted Channel 4 to commission independent reviews.
Reviews by law firm Clyde and former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey cleared Channel 4 of wrongdoing. However, proposed safety changes such as 24/7 recording made continuation "too onerous," CEO Priya Dogra said.
Dogra stated the show has "run its course over ten years," emphasizing that welfare recommendations challenged the editorial proposition. She noted the format itself is not inherently unsafe.
Channel 4 will redirect the show's budget toward new British television projects, seeking to develop "distinctive and disruptive" content. The broadcaster aims to kickstart a creative renewal era.
