Jury begins deliberating at Russell Brand’s rape and sexual assault trial
Jurors must decide whether Brand committed seven sex crimes after six women described alleged assaults over a decade, prosecutors said.
On Tuesday, a London jury began deliberating the verdict in British comedian Russell Brand's rape and sexual assault trial, with Judge Joel Bennathan instructing the 12 jurors that they must reach a unanimous decision on seven criminal counts.
Six women accuse Brand of sexual misconduct spanning 1999 to 2009, with allegations emerging after a 2023 documentary that prosecutors say made complainants realize they were "not alone" in experiencing a pattern of behavior.
Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC described Brand as "ruthless, calculated and manipulative," while defense barrister Ian Winter argued that media coverage had "poisoned the well of justice" by prompting women to come forward.
Brand's wife, Laura Gallacher, testified that he is "caring, kind and a wonderful father," while Brand admitted using his fame to "facilitate sexual access" but insisted all encounters were consensual.
Seven criminal counts, including rape and attempted indecent assault, now rest with the jury at Southwark Crown Court; if convicted, the 51-year-old faces up to life in prison for alleged misconduct spanning over 10 years.
