British Passengers on Virus-Hit Cruise Ship to Isolate on Wirral
Health officials said 8 hantavirus cases, including 3 deaths, have been confirmed as screening begins for passengers leaving the ship.
The Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius will anchor off Spain's Canary Islands around 5 or 6 a.m. local time Sunday, with nearly 150 people aboard awaiting evacuation following weeks at sea during a hantavirus outbreak.
Following the ship's April 1 departure from Argentina and stops at the South Sandwich Islands, eight hantavirus cases have been confirmed, including three deaths, with the most recent occurring aboard ship May 2 and another in Johannesburg, South Africa, on April 26.
Five cases have been confirmed including two British men receiving treatment in the Netherlands and South Africa, and a third Briton in intensive care with confirmed infection on Tristan da Cunha; a Swiss man developed symptoms May 6 after returning to Zurich, with four additional cases considered suspected.
About 24 British passengers will isolate at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral upon arrival, where NHS England North West and NHS Cheshire said they will undergo clinical assessment and testing with an expected stay of up to 72 hours in line with UK Health Security Agency advice.
Repatriation flights are expected between Sunday and Monday, with the remaining 22 Britons due to fly home on a charter flight soon after, while the World Health Organization recommends a 42-day monitoring period and the United States is tracking returned passengers in Arizona, California, Georgia and Texas.
