Many House Republicans will back a bill to release Epstein files, leaders of the effort say
The bipartisan bill, backed by 218 House members, would mandate Justice Department disclosure of Epstein files while protecting victim privacy amid political tensions.
- On Tuesday the House will consider the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which would compel the Justice Department to release files tied to Jeffrey Epstein and his death, with dozens of Republicans expected to support it, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., said.
- Using a discharge petition, lawmakers sought to bypass leadership after Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., filed it in July and Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., became the 218th signature last week.
- Three Republicans had joined Massie in signing the petition: Marjorie Taylor Greene, Rep. , Nancy Mace, Rep. , and Lauren Boebert, Rep. ; the bill allows redactions for victims of Jeffrey Epstein and ongoing investigations.
- A House vote could create a rift between the president and his party, as President Donald Trump withdrew support from Marjorie Taylor Greene, Rep. , who seeks 2026 reelection, while Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., warned the vote record will 'last longer than Donald Trump’s presidency.'
- If the House passes it, the Senate's cooperation is uncertain, the bill would likely need to overcome a presidential veto, and proponents say disclosure could hold at least 20 people accountable.
