Mahatma Gandhi Manuscript Sells for Record Rs 16.2 Crore at Saffronart Auction
The sale set a new world record for an Indian historical document, with other Gandhi lots also drawing strong bids, Saffronart said.
A collection of 688 autographed reflections by Mahatma Gandhi, titled 'A Thought for the Day', sold for Rs 16.20 crore at a Saffronart auction, establishing a world record for an Indian historical document.
Preserved by the Hingorani family for generations, the archive contains personal correspondence and reflections spanning two decades, documenting the friendship between Mahatma Gandhi and close associate Anand T Hingorani.
The manuscript addresses truth, ahimsa, and the search for God; other significant sales included 'Message on God' for Rs 1.68 crore and Gandhi's 'peti charkha' spinning wheel for Rs 1.02 crore.
Dinesh Vazirani, co-founder of Saffronart, said the reflections offer "rare insight into how Gandhi lived the principles he advocated publicly," during an auction featuring 86 lots of letters and manuscripts.
Beyond documenting political events, the collection reveals Gandhi as an individual "who offered counsel, consolation, discipline, and affection to those closest to him," serving as a valuable record of his life and thought.
