Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits western Turkey, causing buildings to collapse

  • On Monday, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck northwestern Türkiye at 10:48 p.m. near Sındırgı, Balıkesir Province, with a depth of about 6 kilometers, AFAD and EMSC reported.
  • Because the African and Eurasian plates converge, Türkiye sits in a highly seismically active Mediterranean zone where complex fault systems have produced damaging earthquakes, the U.S. Geological Survey says.
  • Dozens of people reported feeling the quake in Istanbul and nearby provinces Bursa, Manisa and Izmir, while residents near the epicenter described intense, rotational shaking and smaller shocks followed.
  • Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported collapses including three unoccupied buildings and a shop in Sındırgı, while district administrator Dogukan Koyuncu said no fatalities have been identified and Balıkesir's governor Ismail Ustaoglu reported 22 panic-related injuries.
  • The 2023 earthquakes showed how deadly similar quakes can be, as the magnitude 7.8 event killed more than 53,000 people and damaged buildings across 11 southern and southeastern provinces.
