Israeli military, pledging to defend Druze minorities, says it attacked Syrian military headquarters in Damascus
SOUTHERN SYRIAN CITY OF SUWAYDA AND DAMASCUS, SYRIA, JUL 16 – Israel has conducted nearly 160 airstrikes targeting Syrian military sites to protect the Druze minority amid clashes that have killed over 300 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
- Tuesday’s clashes in Sweida saw Syrian government forces enter under a ceasefire that then swiftly collapsed, with regime troops believed to control over 70% of the city.
- Initial clashes in Suwayda province erupted when a Druze merchant was abducted, resulting in over 200 deaths, including civilians and security forces.
- Casualties exceeded 250, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, including 138 soldiers and security forces.
- In Damascus, the Israeli military launched rare airstrikes, targeting the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters, as part of ongoing efforts to counter Syrian regime forces.
- On Wednesday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said, `we will continue to attack regime forces until they withdraw`, adding `we will also soon raise the bar of responses if the message is not understood`.
