Musk says steps to stop Russia from using Starlink seem to have worked
Ukraine and SpaceX say initial measures to block unauthorized Russian use of Starlink for drone guidance have shown results, protecting civilians and infrastructure from strikes.
- Musk wrote on Feb. 1 that SpaceX's efforts to halt unauthorized Russian use of Starlink seemed to succeed, saying, `Looks like the steps we took to stop the unauthorised use of Starlink by Russia have worked.`
- Following discovery of terminals on long-range Russian drones, Kyiv reached out to SpaceX, with Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Defence Minister, saying his agency contacted SpaceX hours after reports on January 29.
- SpaceX set a 75kph speed limit on Starlink terminals over Ukraine, Fedorov said, to hinder control of Russian drones that move faster and are difficult to shoot down.
- On Feb. 2 the Ukrainian government approved a resolution requiring Starlink registration, allowing only verified terminals and disconnecting unregistered devices, with Fedorov saying, `We are implementing this in cooperation with SpaceX.`
- Starlink's battlefield role has increased Elon Musk's geopolitical sway, with Kyiv receiving over 50,000 terminals and Fedorov praising their importance last week.
