School Holiday: Karnataka Announces Holiday for Government Schools Till October 18 Amid ‘Caste Survey’
The caste census deadline is extended to October 18 with half-day school schedules and holidays to help teachers complete enumeration covering 63% of households, officials said.
- On October 8, 2025, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced extended Dasara holidays for government and aided schools until October 18, with teachers in Bengaluru's five municipal corporation limits ordered to continue census duties till October 24 after consulting cabinet colleagues.
- The census began on September 22 under the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, and the original October 7 deadline lapsed because enumeration lagged in several districts, prompting a review.
- Officials say about 10.9 million households have been surveyed, using around 1.75 lakh teachers and costing Rs 420 crore with a 60-question questionnaire.
- Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa ordered half-day classes from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., requiring teachers' post-1 p.m. enumeration duties including holiday work outside Bengaluru.
- The Karnataka High Court ordered safeguards for respondents' privacy and officials warned of disciplinary action against those delaying the enumeration.
