Manchin endorses Collins in Maine Senate race
Manchin called Collins and Rogers independent voices as both face close races that could help decide Senate control, according to campaign and polling reports.
On Monday, former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat-turned-independent, endorsed Republican Sen. Susan Collins's reelection campaign, praising her as an independent-minded lawmaker.
Manchin, who called Collins "the soul of the Senate," highlighted their bipartisan work in the Common Sense Coalition and their collaboration on the Electoral Count Act after the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots.
Recent CNN polling shows a tight contest between Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson, a race crucial to determining which party retains Senate control during President Donald Trump's final two years.
Collins's campaign highlighted the endorsement in a Monday news release to bolster her brand as a moderate voice, while Democrats continue working to tie her to Trump's unpopular trade policies.
Manchin launched a national effort in July to help elect more independents, criticizing the "toxic" branding of both major parties while supporting candidates willing to solve problems.
