Italian inflation accelerated more than anticipated to exceed the European Central Bank’s 2% target for the first time in 18 months.

Inflation in Italy recorded a further acceleration in March year-on-year, to 2.0% (+0.4 points), due in particular to the increase in energy prices, the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) announced on Monday in its first estimate.

In February, inflation was still at 1.7 percent, leading to a downward trend over several months. The current trend is therefore a reversal of the trend. Inflation in Italy is now above the target of 2 percent set by the European Central Bank (ECB). In Germany, on the other hand, inflation has fallen to 2.2 percent compared to the previous month.
