Kumar Sangakkara Questions Sam Curran's Decision to Skip RR's IPL 2026 Campaign After Surrey Return: ‘Disappointing'
Sangakkara said Rajasthan Royals were told Curran had a season-ending injury and backed the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s strict availability rules.
Following Rajasthan Royals' exit from the Indian Premier League on Friday, Head Coach Kumar Sangakkara questioned English all-rounder Sam Curran's absence, citing the player's recent return to action for Surrey despite claims of a season-ending injury.
Before the 2026 season began, Rajasthan Royals were informed Curran had sustained a groin injury, prompting the franchise to sign Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for the two-month tournament.
"A proper tight policy around that is always a requirement," Sangakkara said, emphasizing that The BCCI must enforce strict availability rules to ensure franchises rely on accurate injury reporting.
Contrasting Curran's departure, Sangakkara praised overseas players like Adam Milne, Shimron Hetmyer, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, and Kwena Maphaka for staying committed despite limited game time during the campaign.
Valued at Rs 2.4 crore, the contract involving Curran underscores the challenge of managing overseas commitments, as Rajasthan Royals reached the playoffs without one of their marquee signings.
