Former senior EU diplomat Mogherini resigns as rector amid fraud probe
Federica Mogherini resigned following a Belgian-led probe into procurement fraud tied to an EU diplomatic training contract awarded to the College of Europe.
- Federica Mogherini, former EU foreign policy and security chief and College of Europe rector, resigned on Thursday, saying `In line with the utmost rigour and fairness with which I always carried out my duties, today I decided to resign`.
- The EPPO opened a fraud investigation into EEAS procurement tied to the European Union Diplomatic Academy, alleging procurement fraud, corruption, conflict of interest, and violation of professional secrecy.
- Belgian police carried out searches in Brussels and Bruges and briefly detained Mogherini, Stefano Sannino and two other suspects on Tuesday; the EPPO said all three were questioned and formally notified of accusations.
- The scope of the contract, awarded by the EEAS in 2021-2022, expands the probe's institutional reach; the College of Europe campuses in Bruges, Warsaw and Tirana are tied to the investigation.
