Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS to Be Livestreamed Tonight

The Virtual Telescope Project livestreams rare interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as it departs the solar system, visible through robotic telescopes in Italy and amateur setups worldwide.

  • On Nov. 16, the Virtual Telescope Project will broadcast live views of comet 3I/ATLAS beginning at 11:15 p.m. ET from robotic telescopes in Manciano, Italy on the Virtual Telescope Project's YouTube channel.
  • Comet 3I/ATLAS, discovered on July 1 earlier this year, was confirmed as the third interstellar object and recently emerged from behind the Sun after perihelion on Oct. 30 into the morning sky.
  • With magnitude +10.9, the comet 3I/ATLAS is too faint for the naked eye but shows a bright central coma and lengthening ion tail in Gianluca Masi's early November images.
  • For those without telescopes, the Virtual Telescope Project provides the best chance to witness this rare interstellar traveller, giving the general public and amateur astronomers a rare, immediate opportunity to observe it.
  • Looking ahead, continued monitoring will benefit from Mars orbiters imaging 3I/ATLAS while hidden, confirming its escape trajectory leaving the solar system and its interstellar origin.
