Indian Navy to commission stealth frigates Udaygiri, Himgiri at Visakhapatnam

The Project 17A frigates Udaygiri and Himgiri, built with 75% indigenous content, will join the Eastern Fleet to strengthen India's maritime security, officials said.

  • On Tuesday , the Indian Navy will commission Udaygiri and Himgiri at Naval Base, Visakhapatnam, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presiding over the first simultaneous commissioning of frontline warships from different shipyards.
  • Built largely indigenously, the ships carry nearly 75% indigenous content supported by hundreds of indigenous MSMEs and revive naval heritage with names from earlier INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri .
  • As follow-on Project 17A frigates, Udaygiri and Himgiri feature enhanced stealth, modern sensors and weapons, and are fitted with Combined Diesel or Gas propulsion; Udaygiri was WDB's 100th design and fastest delivered using modular construction.
  • Upon induction, both frigates will join the Eastern Fleet, augmenting the Navy's combat readiness and strengthening India's maritime resolve across the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd , Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers , Kolkata, the frigates highlight India’s growing shipbuilding expertise and maritime importance of its eastern seaboard.
