India, Nepal discuss ways to take forward bilateral ties, development cooperation

The two countries completed legal steps for a cross-border crime pact and launched a remittance link to speed personal transfers.

  • On Saturday, Nepal Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal met External Affairs minister Jaishankar in Delhi to enforce the India-Nepal Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement, establishing a legal framework to tackle "cross-border crimes."
  • This official visit, the first since Prime Minister Balendra Shah assumed office in March, reinforces India's "Neighbourhood First" policy and follows recent high-level talks between the two countries.
  • Jaishankar handed over 72 health facilities and 12 cultural heritage projects to the visiting Foreign Minister, completed under India's post-2015 "Earthquake Reconstruction Assistance" program.
  • Both Ministers launched a Peer-to-Peer linkage between India's Unified Payments Interface and Nepal's National Payments Interface to facilitate cross-border personal remittances, while witnessing a MoU signing between Digital India Bhashini and Kathmandu University.
  • Vowing to take bilateral ties to "new heights," the two ministers reviewed energy, trade, and transit cooperation as the Ministry of External Affairs noted discussions reflected unique, special ties between the nations.
