Afghanistan Announces Test and ODI Squads for India Tour — Check Full List of Players
Selectors kept Rashid Khan out of the one-off Test to manage injury risk, while retaining him for the limited-overs leg of the India tour.
On Tuesday, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced squads for the upcoming Test and ODI series against India, with Hashmatullah Shahidi named captain of both teams but star leg-spinner Rashid Khan notably excluded from the Test setup.
Rashid Khan's exclusion stems from his recovery following surgery after the ICC World Cup 2023, with medical experts advising him to avoid red-ball cricket because bowling long spells could injure his body.
The 15-member Test squad includes wicketkeepers Afsar Zazai and Ikram Alikhil alongside spin options Qais Ahmad and Sharafudin Ashraf, with the match running June 6 to 10 in New Chandigarh; the ODI squad features Mohammad Nabi, Ibrahim Zadran and Rashid Khan from June 14 to 20.
Rashid Khan will feature prominently in the ODI series, where Afghanistan expects the leg-spinner to shoulder major responsibility in their spin-heavy attack alongside returning Mohammad Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
The ODI series carries heightened significance as both nations prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with Afghanistan's selection reflecting long-term planning while the Test stands outside the World Test Championship cycle.
