Cinemark to Open New 70mm IMAX Screens Ahead of 'The Odyssey' Release

Cinemark will add seven new IMAX screens, including three rare 70mm film systems, increasing global 70mm IMAX locations from 30 to nearly 40, ahead of Nolan’s The Odyssey.

  • Cinemark announced Monday it will build three new 70mm film projection systems and four IMAX with Laser systems, upgrading 12 IMAX screens in the United States.
  • Filmmaker Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is the first Hollywood feature shot entirely in 70mm IMAX, and earlier this year Regal Cinemas announced IMAX upgrades ahead of the film's release.
  • As of today, only about 30 theaters worldwide can show 70mm IMAX, 19 in the U.S., and tickets for limited 70mm showings sold out a year ahead, showing strong demand.
  • Cinemark President and CEO Sean Gamble said the upgrades reflect commitment to premium large formats as IMAX releases have driven higher attendance in recent years.
  • By the time The Odyssey opens, IMAX operates more than 1,800 theaters and about 40 70mm-capable theaters will widen access with new IMAX cameras.
