Pritam Reacts to Allegations of ‘Copying’ Cocktail 2 Song Mashooqa From Italian Song: At This Point, You're My Unpaid PR
Pritam dismissed plagiarism claims on Instagram as fans debated whether the viral track was sampling the 1993 Italian original.
Music composer Pritam faces plagiarism allegations following the release of "Mashooqa," a track from the upcoming film Cocktail 2, with netizens alleging the song was copied from a 1993 Italian track "Se So Arrubate A Nonna" by duo Bibi and Coco.
The controversy started when a Reddit user recently shared videos comparing the new track to the 1993 Italian song, with social media users claiming the music was almost identical to the Neapolitan track titled "The Kidnapped Grandma."
Pritam addressed the allegations on Instagram, dismissing claims as "imaginary similarities" and criticizing "self-appointed music detectives." He wrote, "Boss, at this point, you are my unpaid PR team. I just want to say guys, NOT NICE."
While some fans defended the composer, noting the song might be sampled rather than copied, a Reddit user explained that sampling involves layering instruments over a main beat—a common music industry practice used by major artists.
In a 2016 interview, Pritam admitted he made mistakes early in his career but became more particular about his music. He also cited a past incident involving "Pungi" from Agent Vinod as a false accusation that required a court apology.
