UP Police Bust Major Illegal Conversion Racket - 10 Arrested
UTTAR PRADESH, JUL 19 – Uttar Pradesh Police arrested 10 people from six states in a network using coercion and ISIS-style tactics, funded internationally to target vulnerable women, officials said.
- On July 19, 2025, Uttar Pradesh Police apprehended ten individuals across six states as part of their investigation into an illegal religious conversion scheme linked to the kidnapping of two sisters in Agra.
- The arrests followed a probe initiated in March 2025 after the disappearance of the sisters aged 18 and 33, amid allegations of coercive conversions and radicalization.
- Raids and arrests were conducted across Delhi, West Bengal, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh with the support of dedicated state police units specializing in counter-terrorism and high-priority investigations, as part of the Mission Asmita campaign.
- The investigation uncovered financial support originating from North America, along with ties to extremist organizations such as PFI and SDPI. Those involved were accused of providing safe locations, legal assistance, and aid in coordinating unauthorized conversions across multiple states.
- The operation uncovered a transnational network spanning multiple states, with additional arrests underway, and led to the filing of charges under the Uttarakhand law governing religious conversion against five individuals from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Goa.
