'I am incredibly excited': World champion coach takes charge of Breakers
The Breakers say Herbert’s World Cup-winning experience and elite-talent management fit their push to compete at the top of the NBL.
On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, World Cup-winning coach Gordon Herbert signed a two-year deal to lead the New Zealand Breakers, marking a significant acquisition for the NBL franchise after extended negotiations.
Breakers chairman and owner Marc Mitchell initiated a global search after former head coach Petteri Koponen opted not to extend his contract earlier this year.
Herbert arrives with an extensive international resume, most notably guiding the German national team to a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and serving as head coach of EuroLeague team Bayern Munich.
The new coach will lead a roster featuring Parker Jackson-Cartwright, Sam Mennenga, and Dejan Vasiljevic, with Herbert stating, "This is a club with a prestigious history and a clear ambition for the future."
Herbert will balance these duties while continuing as head coach of the Canadian national team, preparing them for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics.
