Hungary has financial shield agreement with Washington, Orban says
- On Friday, Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary, met Donald Trump, U.S. President, at the White House in Washington, D.C. and secured a financial shield agreement to protect Hungary's economy.
- Facing economic strain since 2022, Hungary sought relief as its economy stagnated following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the European Union suspended billions in funding.
- The deal includes energy commitments and a sanctions reprieve as Orban said Hungary secured a one-year exemption from U.S. sanctions on Russian energy and a White House official confirmed $600m in U.S. liquefied natural gas contracts.
- On Sunday, Orban told reporters the U.S. pledged protection, stating `I have also made an agreement with the U.S. President on a financial shield` that should prevent financing problems.
- Critics say the deal lets Orban sidestep EU pressure as he faces a possible tight election next year and said, `That Hungary or its currency could be attacked, or that the Hungarian budget could be put in difficult situation... this should be forgotten`.
