UK Expands Prostate Cancer Trial for Black Men Aged 45-74
Tens of thousands more Black men will be invited into the TRANSFORM study as researchers test MRI scans and genetic checks to improve screening.
On Tuesday, Health Secretary James Murray announced a £20 million investment to expand the TRANSFORM trial, inviting Black men aged 45-74 to participate in prostate cancer screening research.
The government accepted a UK National Screening Committee recommendation against population-wide PSA screening, citing 'ongoing uncertainty on whether screening would cause more good than harm' despite criticism from campaigners.
Black men are twice as likely to develop prostate cancer, prompting the trial's focus on new screening techniques including MRI scans and genetic tests to improve detection accuracy.
Prostate Cancer UK CEO Laura Kerby described the funding as a 'truly historic moment,' while Lord Cameron criticized the broader screening decision as 'too timid, too slow, and lacking the bold ambition.'
Backing the Black Health Equity Strategy, the government aims to generate evidence for earlier diagnosis when treatment is most effective, with the programme expected to roll out in 2027.
