Govt doubles daily quota of 5kg LPG cylinders for migrant workers across states

  • On Monday, the Petroleum Ministry doubled the daily quantity of 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinders available in each State for distribution to migrant labourers.
  • Targeting migrant populations in urban and semi-urban areas, the ministry aims to strengthen fuel access where these workers face critical supply challenges for essential cooking needs.
  • State Governments and their Food or Civil Supplies Departments will manage distribution with assistance from OMCs; these 5 kg cylinders are priced at market rates and require no address proof for procurement.
  • Authorities have intensified enforcement against hoarding and black marketing, seizing over 50,000 cylinders since March and issuing more than 1,400 show-cause notices, with 36 dealerships suspended to date.
  • Government data shows around 6.75 lakh cylinders sold since March 23, while the ministry maintains commercial LPG supplies at 70 per cent of pre-crisis levels to manage overall demand.
