Google to spend $15 billion on AI data centre in biggest India investment

  • On Tuesday, October 14, Google announced a $15 billion investment over five years to build an AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, at the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi.
  • The state coordinated with the central government of India to clear tax and policy hurdles, with Nara Lokesh securing clarity on data taxation and guiding Google to the Vishakhapatnam site.
  • Technically, the hub will start with 1 gigawatt initial capacity, combining compute, an international subsea gateway, and renewable energy infrastructure, with plans to scale to multiple gigawatts.
  • State officials say the Visakhapatnam hub will generate 188,000 jobs and be Google's largest AI hub outside the US, while Andhra Pradesh aims to scale hosting to 6 GW.
  • With India nearing 900 million internet users, demand for AI tools is surging and CBRE Group Inc. projects the data center market could exceed $100 billion by 2027, though Andhra Pradesh government addresses water and power bottlenecks.
