Businessman and Philanthropist Martin Naughton Dies Aged 87
The Irish entrepreneur built Glen Dimplex into a global manufacturer and was honored for philanthropy in education, the arts and peace efforts.
On Friday, Glen Dimplex Group founder Martin Naughton died at 87 at Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle after falling ill while traveling with his wife, Carmel.
Naughton founded Glen Electric in Newry in 1973, acquiring Dimplex four years later to form the Glen Dimplex Group, which grew from seven employees to a global business with a €1.5 billion turnover.
Beyond business, Naughton was a renowned philanthropist, donating €25 million to Trinity College Dublin in 2018 and receiving a KBE from the Prince of Wales and France's Legion d'Honneur.
Tánaiste Simon Harris called Naughton an "exceptional businessman, an incredible philanthropist and an all-round thoroughly good human being," while British Ambassador to Ireland Kara Owen praised his "significant personal contribution to peace and reconciliation."
Naughton leaves behind his wife Carmel and their children Fiona, Neil, and Fergal; his family stated that "his greatest pride and joy was his wife Carmel and their beloved family.
